Why this direction (Pantone → RAL) is the common one
Most brands establish identity in Pantone first — the print collateral, the packaging, the digital surfaces all start from a PMS palette. The need for RAL arrives later, when the brand extends into painted hardware: signage frames, wayfinding, interior architecture, vehicle livery, product enclosures. The converter exists to take the established brand Pantone and find the painted-color spec that lives closest to it.
Going the other way (RAL → Pantone) is the inverse use case — when an existing industrial color needs a graphic-arts companion. Both directions share the same matching engine: CIE Lab + CIEDE2000 against the published reference sets.
How the closest RAL is computed
Each Pantone in the reference set has a published sRGB value; each RAL Classic chip has a published sRGB approximation derived from its spectral measurement. Both are converted to CIE Lab under D65 with the 2° standard observer. CIEDE2000 distance is computed Pantone-to-RAL across the full RAL Classic set (~213 colors), and the top five matches are returned ranked by ΔE.
The math is fast and deterministic. The interpretation requires judgment: a ΔE of 3 is acceptable for some industrial applications, marginal for others. Always check the ΔE before specifying the RAL on a production order.
ΔE thresholds for industrial coatings
- ΔE < 2: visually identical. Safe for brand-critical product paint and signage.
- ΔE 2–4: visible to a trained eye in side-by-side comparison. Acceptable for most industrial applications; document the shift.
- ΔE 4–6: visible to general viewers but often acceptable in the absence of a closer RAL. Flag for brand approval before painting.
- ΔE > 6: noticeable mismatch. Consider custom paint formulation, RAL Design (larger gamut), or redefining the brand color to one that bridges cleanly.
From RAL chip to production paint
Once the closest RAL is selected, the workflow is: spec RAL + gloss level on the purchase order, request a physical spray-out from the coater on the actual substrate, measure with a spectrophotometer if brand-critical, and approve or re-formulate. Skipping the spray-out is the most common cause of an unhappy brand owner discovering a 3-unit ΔE shift on a painted facade that was specified months earlier on a desk.
For very large-scale work — fleets, architectural facades — consider commissioning a custom-mixed coating from a major paint supplier (Sherwin-Williams, AkzoNobel, PPG, Tikkurila) that targets the original Pantone Lab values directly, bypassing the RAL approximation entirely.
